Model numbers / Makita
What do the letters at the end of Makita model numbers mean?
On Makita US model numbers, Z means tool only: no battery or charger; ZB means tool only, Sub-Compact (black) version; T means kit with 18V LXT 5.0Ah batteries and a charger (usually); PT means 36V (18V X2) kit with two 18V LXT 5.0Ah batteries and a dual-port charger (usually); M1 means 40V max XGT kit with one 4.0Ah battery and a charger (usually); D means 40V max XGT kit with two 2.5Ah batteries and a charger (usually); SY1B means sub-Compact kit with one 18V LXT compact battery, a charger and a tool bag (usually).
Makita model numbers end in letters: Z means tool only. In kits the letters name the battery (T = 5.0Ah, D = two 40V 2.5Ah). Some kits (XFD131) use a different number from their tool (XFD13Z): the box list on each page names the tool.

What the Makita ending does not tell you
- Rules checked 2026-10-18 against the box lists on Makita's own pages; the box list on each page is authoritative.
- Makita does not publish a tool-only weight for most cordless tools: its weight figure includes a battery.
"Usually" means we found exceptions or too few examples to call it a rule. The box list on each model page, taken from Makita's own page, is what to trust. For battery counts and sizes across every kit we cover, see what ships in each kit.
